Jewelry Designer Amrita Singh 'Tricks Out' a Bicycle for Tour de Fashion

Delhi born and NYC raised jewelry designer AMRITA SINGH(pictured above), was asked to "trick out" a bicycle for the "Tour de Fashion: Bike Sharing Program" that will be running from September 8-15. An event was held today at the Broadway Pedestrian Plaza on 30th & 40th to kick things off and even the rain didn't stop fashionista's from coming out this morning to check out the bikes.

She joins an elite group of 30 members such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Isaac Mizrahi, Prabal Gurung, Elie Tahari and Rebecca Taylor who are involved with the program. Tour de Fashion was started in part to bring light to NYC's legendary Fashion District as the focal point of American Fashion by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District. The bikes will be available to ride with no charge but requires a valid driver's license and credit card along the Broadway Pedestrian Plaza.

Amrita's contemporary line of jewelry can be purchased at Nordstrom, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Intermix, Holt Renfew and boutiques throughout the US. Her unique and fashion forward pieces has garnished her with a strong following in the fashion world and with celebrities along with winning awards in the fashion industry. See the above flyer for details. I got the opportunity to ask Amrita some questions so continue to find out the designers that inspires her, what the future holds for her line, her background and more. Also see more pictures from the launch event today.....

1. What was your inspiration behind the design of the bike?
The inspiration is “Royalty”....We made the bike fit for a Maharaja / Maharani (Indian Prince / Princess). The vibrant colors are inspired by the “Tutti Frutti” collection made by Cartier for Indian Royalty.

2. How does your background play a role in your designs/ collection?
I draw upon the designs of India and the Mughal dynasty to create artisanal Indian Jewelry and accessories. The Amrita Singh Tour de Fashion bike is a perfect example of the blends of Old World and New World influence seen in my designs:  The colorful bangles on the handlebars modernize the traditional silk jacquard on the bicycle seat.

3.  How does it feel to be part of "Tour de Fashion" in the ranks of some of the biggest names in fashion?
Of course, I am honored to be working with so many talented designers this Fashion Week. I can’t wait to see the other bikes!

4. Do you plan on expanding your line?
Yes, my line of designer costume jewelry is continuously expanding and evolving, with new styles added every season.  New arrivals can always be found on my website. I have also recently added new accessories collections, including scarves, sandals, handbags, headbands and jewelry cases.

5. Name some designers that inspire you?
Oscar de la Renta, Diane Von Furstenberg and Coco Chanel
